National Service Scheme (NSS)
The National Service Scheme (NSS) is a public service program in India, launched in 1969, the centenary year of Mahatma Gandhi’s birth. It is run by the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports and is primarily aimed at developing the personality and character of students through voluntary community service.
Objectives of NSS
- To develop a sense of social and civic responsibility.
- To encourage students to engage in community service.
- To help students understand the community and their role in improving it.
- To develop leadership qualities, team spirit, and democratic attitudes.
- To build a sense of national integration and social harmony.
Motto
"Not Me, But You" - This reflects the selfless service attitude that the scheme promotes.
Who Can Join?
Students at the college and higher secondary level can volunteer to join NSS. Volunteers usually serve for two years, which includes participation in regular activities and special camping programs.
Activities Include:
- Literacy drives.
- Health camps and awareness programs.
- Cleanliness drives (Swachh Bharat Abhiyan).
- Tree plantation.
- Blood donation camps.
- Disaster relief work.
- Women empowerment and rural development projects.
Special Camps
NSS units organize 7-day special camps in rural or urban areas where volunteers live and work together to carry out service-based projects.
Recognition
Active NSS volunteers who complete the required hours and participate in special camps receive certificates, which can be useful for job applications and higher studies. Some may even get a chance to participate in national and international youth exchange programs or represent NSS at the Republic Day Parade in Delhi.
NSS in LCIT
LCIT may feel proud to be the first private engineering college to have been sanctioned an NSS unit in 2005 in Bilaspur (C.G.) region. The college has one unit for boys and girls with 100 allotted seats working under the guidance of NSS officer Mr. Avinash Singh for the year 2024.
